Every Vesper Life formulation is built on clinical science, not convention. This page explains what we test, what we use, and why each decision was made the way it was.
A newborn's skin is 20–30% thinner than adult skin, has a less developed barrier function, and is significantly more permeable to chemical compounds. What goes on an infant's skin can, and does, penetrate deeper and faster.
This means that the formulation choices made for baby care products have real physiological consequences. A sulphate-based cleanser that is "fine" for adult skin can strip the immature stratum corneum of a newborn. A preservative that meets adult safety thresholds can still disrupt a baby's developing skin microbiome.
Every decision in a Vesper Life formulation starts with this understanding. We don't adapt adult formulations. We build for infant physiology from the ground up.
Matched to the natural pH of newborn skin, which ranges from 4.5–5.5. Standard baby washes often exceed pH 7, disrupting the acid mantle.
No SLS, no SLES. We use an amino acid-based surfactant system that cleanses without stripping the skin barrier.
Paraben-free from day one. We use Sodium Benzoate + Potassium Sorbate: effective, mild, and fully disclosed.
Repeat Insult Patch Testing, the clinical gold standard for skin sensitisation and irritation, before any product is released.
PIPT (Product Ingredient Patch Testing) is a rigorous clinical protocol where a product is applied repeatedly to skin under controlled conditions over multiple weeks. It's the industry gold standard for confirming a formulation causes no sensitisation or irritation response.
Our commitment
We do not self-certify. Testing is conducted independently by a certified laboratory, and the full report is available to any parent who requests it.
The product is applied to the same skin site repeatedly over 9 sessions across 3 weeks under occlusive conditions. This maximises skin exposure to detect any sensitisation potential.
A minimum 10–14 day rest period follows. This allows the immune system time to respond if any sensitisation has occurred during induction.
The product is applied to a previously untreated skin site. Any reaction at this stage confirms sensitisation, a far stricter measure than a standard patch test.
A certified dermatologist evaluates and scores each site at every reading. Results are documented in a certified lab report, which we publish in full.
The final report is issued by an independent certified laboratory, not by Vesper Life. We do not write our own safety claims.
The skin's acid mantle, a fine, slightly acidic film on the surface, is the first line of defence against bacteria, pollutants, and moisture loss. In newborns, it takes weeks to months to fully develop.
A product with a pH above 6 (even water itself at pH 7) can temporarily disrupt this barrier. Most conventional baby washes sit at pH 6.5–7.5. Our formulations are maintained at pH 5.5, within the established safe zone for infant skin.

pH Scale: Where we sit
The skin microbiome, the ecosystem of beneficial bacteria on the skin surface, plays a critical role in immune development, barrier function, and protection against infection. In infants, this ecosystem is still developing. Vesper Life's Xylitol complex is designed to support it.

A prebiotic compound that selectively nourishes beneficial skin bacteria. Supports the colonisation of Lactobacillus and other protective strains on the skin surface.
Component 2
Works in synergy with Xylitylglucoside to support skin hydration and the integrity of the extracellular matrix, the structural layer beneath the skin's surface.
Component 3
A naturally occurring sugar alcohol with demonstrated antimicrobial properties against pathogenic bacteria, without disrupting beneficial skin flora. Also contributes to hydration.
